Here are the facts:
1. The Department of Theatre, Film and Dance has been asked to cut 1-2 million of their 4.6 million dollar
budget.
2. A total of 6 million dollars worth of cuts is scheduled for the College of Arts and Sciences.
3. The university is trying to correct a 4 percent deficit in their overall budget.
What this means:
1. The performing arts is being asked to bear a disproportionate size of the cuts among the 27
departments in the College of Arts and Sciences.
2. The types of budget cuts that are being proposed would so severely cripple the performing arts at
Cornell that it would destroy the department's ability to provide nearly any kind of quality education.
3. Although the university is trying to cut 4 percent of its operating budget, it is cutting 25-50 percent
of the budget of the Department of Theatre, Film and Dance.
What we want:
The original scheduled and promised maximum cut for the Department of Theatre, Film and Dance was $500,000; we want this original amount to be cut and no more. Everyone must bear some responsibility in these trying times, but you cannot arbitrarily and disproportionately destroy the arts at Cornell for short term gain.
